SPCF Holds Student Conference on Philippine History, Culture and Society

With the aim at fostering interests on Philippine History among the Filipino youth, the SPCF students organized a student conference on Philippine history, culture and society last March 13, 2014 at the Case Room, Systems Plus College Foundation, Angeles City.

Although the conference was intended for a small audience, more than a hundred students from the cities Angeles and Mabalacat responded to the invitation. Dr. Edgardo G. Galang, SPCF Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the speakers, participants,  guests and participants to the event. Atty. Robert John I. Donesa, SPCF Professor of History, served as the master of ceremonies.

Dr. P.C. Kutschera of the Philippine Amerasian Research Center, College of Social Work, Systems Plus College Foundation, Angeles City, presented a paper on Social Work Practice with Amerasians. Dr. Kutschera believed that Amerasians in the Philippines and in Asia should enjoy the benefits afforded by law to American children. He currently working with the Amerasians of Manila-Angeles-Olongapo area. He believed that area had the world's biggest concentration of Amerasians.

Mr. Dennis Y. Calma, a Retired U S Navy Veteran, presented on the Impact of American Occupation in the Philippines. In general, he assessed that during the American regime, there was much progress in the Philippines. The standard of living was raised. Agriculture and industry were developed. Transportation and communication were improved. Domestic and trade expanded. Health and sanitation were promoted. Education and religion marched with the times.

Mr. Daniel Alejandro Flores, a Mexican-American, presented some Notes on Philippine and Mexican Cultures. He insinuated that it was technically Mexico and not Spain which governed the Philippines. He also highlighted some cultural similarities between Mexico and the Philippines.

Ms. Princess D. Borlongan, a History major from Mabalacat City College, revisited the issue on the site of the The Cry of Balintawak. She offered her own assessment of the issue based on available historical pieces of evidence. While Mr. Emmanuel M. Manalang, a Hospitality Management major of Systems Plus College Foundation, presented some Pampango Delicacies in History.

The Conference was a success.
